Student Voice: The Weekend Boarding Experience at King’s

Thursday 6 March 2025

On the Saturday before last, the King’s weekend Boarders enjoyed a fantastic day out at the Auckland FC vs Wellington Phoenix football game at Mount Smart Go Media Stadium. The atmosphere was great, and the South Stand was full of passionate fans chanting and waving flags.

Auckland started the game in dominant form, scoring three goals in just nine minutes, while goalkeeper Alex Paulsen made two saves from close range to deny Wellington a goal. The Phoenix scored their only goal of the match just after halftime, but it did not make a difference. Logan Rogerson scored his third goal of the afternoon from long range, completing a hat trick. Two more goals from Auckland then sealed the win and the match ended 6-1 to Auckland, keeping them on top of the league table.

On Sunday, we took the train into the Newmarket and walked to the Festival Italiano, an Italian food festival. There were lots of food stalls selling pizza, pasta and lots of different kinds of cheese. The food tasted incredible, and we had lots of fun trying out all the different snacks.

When we got back to school, we played a board game with the tutor on duty called Civilisation. It’s a game where you control an empire, and you have to buy food and other resources to survive. It was really fun, and we enjoyed talking to each other and making jokes.

During a typical weekend for Boarders, Saturday mornings will be reserved for inter-school sports matches and then in the afternoons, we will go out for an activity with the entire House, like watching a rugby game at Eden Park or playing mini-golf. The students get heaps of input in deciding where to go or what to do, not just the tutor on duty. After that, we go out to restaurants or food courts to have dinner, and the cost is completely covered by the school.

On Sundays, we get to sleep in until almost 10am. After that, we have brunch in the dining hall and it’s the best meal of the week, where we are served eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns, cereal, orange juice, toast and pastries. Then, we usually go to Sylvia Park to shop for tuck/snacks for the week and any other necessary toiletries. Sometimes, we will watch a movie at the Hoyts cinema. After heading back to school, the tutor will usually give us 3-4 hours of downtime, where we can do prep or just simply relax after a busy week.
