Houses at King's College

The House system ensures that every King’s student has a place to belong. For both boarding and day students, Houses provide a supportive network that is a key part of our pastoral care kaupapa.

Being part of a House offers each student not only support, but also opportunities for development and personal growth. The structure creates:

  • A place to belong and a sense of identity within the larger school.
  • Leadership roles and responsibilities.
  • Opportunities for socialisation and a foundation for enduring friendships.
  • A framework for exploring sporting and cultural interests.
  • A space to build respect for our differences: cultures, opinions, and more.

Our Houses

The 12 houses at King’s College each have their own unique identities, cultures, and traditions.

Each student is assigned to a house upon their enrolment, and this will become their comprehensive support network. House staff are able to get to know them individually and provide day-to-day care and supervision, monitoring their academic and co-curricular progress. They are also available to support students in their emotional wellbeing and to tend to minor illnesses and injuries.

Boarding Houses

King’s has one of the largest boarding communities in Aotearoa, with students coming from not only the wider Auckland region but the entire country—and overseas. Living onsite is a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in the school culture and all that King’s has to offer.

There are four boarding houses for boys: School, St John’s, Parnell and Selwyn, along with Te Pūtake Lodge for our Year 9 boarders. Our girls’ boarding House for Years 11-13 is Middlemore House, which offers separate common rooms for each year level and shared spaces for socialising.

Boarding at King’s is very flexible. Boarders can choose to stay in their house at weekends, request leave for the entire weekend, or leave on Saturday and return either Sunday night or Monday morning.

House Mentoring

We know that starting at a new school can be daunting! King’s offers a house mentoring programme which is aimed at helping junior students settle in and make their school experience as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. This programme also helps to create enduring bonds between senior and junior students—building that community right from the beginning.

Inter-House competitions

There’s nothing like a bit of rivalry to bring people together! Throughout the year there are competitions between houses in a range of fields—sport, drama, debate, and music—to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to participate.

Each house has its own identity, complete with motto, shield, and colours. Friendly competition fosters unity and creates a lot of fun on campus!

Leadership opportunities

There are many chances for students to step into leadership roles and responsibilities as part of the house system. This allows them to grow their confidence and their leadership skills, both of which will stand them in good stead for life beyond the school years.

Every year, several year 13 students from each house are selected as House Prefects.
