King’s College cyclists delivered an incredible performance at the 2024 National Championships in Timaru, showcasing exceptional talent and teamwork over three thrilling days of competition.
Day 1 – Road Race Success:
The event kicked off with remarkable individual efforts in the road races. Hugh Henshaw (Year 9, Peart) secured a podium finish in the U15 Boys Road Race, taking 3rd place in a high-speed race.
In the U20 Boys Road Race, team captain Oliver Scott (Year 13, Peart) narrowly missed a spot on the podium, placing 4th after a tough battle against fierce competition.
Day 2 – Historic TTT Victory:
The second day was a landmark moment for King’s College as the Junior A Boys Team—comprising Charlie Barron (Year 10, Marsden), Luke Herbert (Year 10, Peart), Riley Hoon (Year 10, Peart), and Cole Feringa (Year 10, Peart)—delivered a flawless strategy in the U16 Team Time Trial (TTT) to claim 1st place, securing the Paul Matthews Cup with a 6-second lead. This victory marks the school’s first-ever TTT national title!
Other team results included:
Senior A Team: 6th place
Junior B Team: 10th place
Day 3 – U15 Points Race Triumph:
Hugh Henshaw capped off an incredible week, clinching the U15 Boys Points Race National Championship in a thrilling photo finish! Meanwhile, teammate Cole Feringa placed 5th, and Luke Herbert finished 7th in a highly competitive race.
For Oliver Scott, it was an emotional final school race as he finished 11th, having been closely marked by his competitors throughout the race. Despite this, Oliver’s leadership was instrumental in King’s College achieving its best-ever Nationals results. His standout season, which included success at the Tour L’Abitibi, has earned him a professional development contract with a French cycling team next year.
Looking Ahead:
With Oliver being the only rider departing the team, the future looks promising for King’s College Cycling. Congratulations to all our riders for their hard work and dedication!
