Our All-Round Education Philosophy

Preparing students to succeed in today’s world

At the heart of our educational philosophy is the simple goal of providing the best all-round education possible; giving students what they need to succeed in whichever field they choose to pursue. Our programmes at all year levels weave the eight key dimensions of education into a thread specific to the needs of each individual young person.

Eight key dimensions of education

A successful education is made up of many strands. We have identified eight key dimensions that inform the King’s Teaching and Learning Philosophy:

  • Learning
  • Internationalism
  • Democracy
  • Environment
  • Adventure
  • Leadership
  • Service
  • Spirituality

Each of these important aspects of a well-rounded education shapes the environment we create for our students. We want to equip them with skills of comprehension and critical thinking that they can apply in a range of situations. It is our hope that our students will enter adulthood with a strong sense of who they are and what they can achieve. They will value freedom of thought and speech, see themselves as global citizens, and aspire to make a difference.

A broad foundation

Our Year 9 and 10 Junior school programme combines traditional academic subjects with a wide range of life skills and thinking skills to give students a strong base for the future.

We try to offer a broad grounding in a wide range of subjects. As students progress through year levels, they have increased choice in what they learn—but they are encouraged to retain a range of subjects for as long as possible, giving them more options as they consider future study options and other endeavours.

A broad foundation

Year 11 Academic Programme

After Years 9 and 10, students follow a bespoke Year 11 Academic Programme  designed to prepare them for their choice of qualification pathway. The programme is bespoke to King's College and has been carefully developed—as an alternative to NCEA Level 1—to deliver a solid grounding and equip students in the best way possible for NCEA or CIE in Years 12 and 13.

Choice in qualifications

King’s students will have access to both National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) pathways; in year 12 and 13 they will make an individual choice about which qualification to pursue.

We are proud to offer this dual qualifications pathway, opening up even more opportunities for King’s students on both a national and international scale.

A positive learning environment

In order to provide the best all-round education possible, our teachers are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and overall positive environment in every classroom. We believe that this supports excellence.

One way in which King’s promotes a positive learning environment is with small class sizes. Our classes rarely exceed 22 students—a low student-to-teacher ratio which means that each learner benefits from more personal attention.
